Children Of Chinese Migrating To US Through Mexico Refusing to Learn Spanish

Jenny Xu is furious at her two children, Lang and Chiu. The family fled from mainland China after her husband Yi was imprisoned for publishing a banned pamphlet, and is now sneaking through Mexico on her way to the United States. But her children refuse to learn the language of their new country.

“All the way through El Salvador and Guatemala, I was patient with them because of our traumatic boat journey,” Mrs. Xu says. “But now, we have been in Mexico for three weeks and they refuse to learn even the basics like ‘I’ and ‘yes’. What kind of message is that to send?”

Expecting to arrive in Los Angeles within the next month, Xu is very worried about their future. “How will they be able to buy groceries or learn in school if they don’t speak Spanish?”
