Man Cited for Driving While Black Has A Long History of DWB’s

When Reading, PA, resident Robert Washington was pulled over by police late Monday morning, he already knew what he had done wrong. The African-American Washington has at least 22 Driving While Black citations, according to the local DMV.

“What can I say?” pleads the 30-year-old file clerk. “I have a car, a job I need to get to, and a driver’s license. I just can’t help myself!”

And it is just that kind of attitude, says Deputy Kurt Miner, that gets black drivers into trouble. “I’ve actually pulled Mr. Washington over three times. When I heard that he had that many DWB’s I began to wonder, isn’t there any accountability in the system? We do it with DUI’s. At some point, after so many infractions, you’ve just got to revoke their license.”

But with over 30 million blacks in America today, at any given moment perhaps 3-5 million are driving while black, which poses a challenge far beyond the capacity of law enforcement.

According to Deputy Miner, “You just do what you can. You see a DWB, you cite him but you’ve gotta let him to drive away. In theory you could write him another ticket write there on the spot, but I feel we’re hamstrung very much like the Border Patrol agents down south. We’re more like catch-and-release fisherman than the police of old.”
