Amnesiac Flying for First Time Since Memory Loss Fascinated by Pre-Flight Safety Video

Last Friday Todd Avery, who suffered significant memory loss when several large wooden boards fell onto his head during an apartment renovation project three months ago, was captivated by the safety demonstration video played on his first flight since the accident.

“I am still in shock,” Avery said from his parents’ home near Chicago, where he had flown from Dallas. “They packed so much information into that five-minute movie, I begged them to show it again but the other passengers told me to shut the hell up. But come on! You’ve got a stewardess explaining those crazy seatbelts, a gay flight attendant showing you how to inflate the lifejacket that is—hello!—under your seat. Can you say, ‘Sweet!’ or what? And that’s all just in the first minute, for Christ’s sake.”

Todd’s girlfriend Wendy sat next to him on the flight. “I always wondered why the airlines kept showing us those stupid videos before every flight. I mean, at this point hasn’t everyone who is going to fly already flown before? But because of Todd’s situation, now I understand why they do it—they have to. How many amnesiacs take to the skies each day? It could be tens if not dozens. And if they’re going to remove peanuts from all flights because of some guy in Iowa who might die, then I guess this makes ten or twelve times as much sense.”

According to Todd’s mother Martha, he is in Chicago to see specialists regarding the long term damage done to his memory. “We know that he has his full vocabulary and that he can recognize people and things up to a certain point. But some things just aren’t there, and hopefully the doctors can give us a prognosis as to whether we can expect to see a full recovery.”

“Well I’ll say this,” Wendy added, “if he goes through that song and dance every time we fly somewhere, he’ll need to buy a membership to Match.com.”

But Todd wasn’t even paying attention to the conversation: “I still can’t believe they have rubber slides under the exit doors…”
