Despite Dying of AIDS, He’s Committed to Spreading HIV-Positive Message

He contracted it in early 1996 during a methamphetamine-fueled weekend sex romp in Chicago where he engaged in unprotected sex with several dozen men. He started getting sick two years ago. Today he knows he’s dying.

But that hasn’t stopped paper-pusher Toby Franks from continuing to spread an HIV-positive message. “Life is a gift sponge from which you must squeeze every last ounce as quickly as possible,” he says from a small bed in the corner of his studio apartment. “If you see a plate of food, scarf it down immediately. If you see ten cocks, find a place for all of them at once.”

Though some would say it was just this kind of hedonistic gluttony that got Mr. Franks into his current predicament, he disagrees. Holding the hand of sometime/longtime partner Reginald, he says, “Reggie was my 400th lover. Had I played it safe and slow like most people, we never would have met and would not have been able to share my agonizing death characterized by barfing, diarrhea, and the inability to perform kinky sexual favors for strange men who I encounter while running my daily errands.”
